Viking Hood Blower Slow, Loud or Low Only

Coastal hoods fail from the outside in. The blower housing corrodes, the wheel goes out of balance, and the control loses the top speed first.

A blower is sized to the surface below it, and to the house around it.

A ventilation hood at the beach is the first thing in the kitchen to go. It is the only appliance whose job is to pull outside air through itself, and at 1st through 5th Street that air is loaded with chloride most of the year.

What actually fails

The blower housing corrodes before the motor does. Once the housing loses material the wheel sits fractionally out of true, and an out-of-balance wheel chews its own bearings. By the time you can hear it, the wheel is usually the part that has to go, not just the bearing.

Speed controls fail from the top down. The highest speed carries the most current, so the highest speed is the one that stops working first. A hood that has lost only its boost setting is telling you where to look.

What the visit looks like

The liner comes down and the blower comes out. Housing, wheel, capacitor and control are checked separately, because replacing the whole assembly when only the wheel is finished is how a ventilation repair turns into a four-figure job for no reason.

Ducted hoods on the beach also need the roof or wall termination looked at. A corroded damper that will not open makes a healthy blower look dead.

One clarification, because the word “duct” does a lot of work in Florida: the duct in this page is the kitchen exhaust run — the pipe that takes cooking air from the hood liner out through the wall or the roof, and nothing else. Air conditioning ducts, returns, plenums and air handlers are a separate trade and not something this shop works on. If the room is uncomfortable rather than smoky, the hood is not the appliance to start with.

Why the airflow goes before the noise

Most people call when the hood gets loud. The airflow has usually been dropping for a year before that, and it is worth knowing what to listen and look for.

A hood that has lost capture is easy to test without instruments. Steam from a pot on the front burners should be drawn back and up rather than rolling out into the room. If it rolls, the system is moving less air than it was designed to, and there are only a few reasons why.

The first is the filters. Baffle filters on the coast collect grease and then collect salt on top of the grease, and the two together make a surface that degreasing alone does not clear. Filters that have gone dull and slightly rough to the touch are restricting.

The second is the wheel. A blower wheel with deposit built unevenly across its blades is both moving less air and running out of balance, and the imbalance is what eventually kills the bearings.

The third is the duct run and its termination. Beach houses often have a short run to a wall cap, and a wall cap in this environment corrodes. A damper flap that no longer swings freely is the most common single cause of a hood that sounds perfectly healthy and does nothing.

Makeup air

A professional range under a high-capacity hood in a tight modern house can pull harder than the house can replace. When that happens the hood does not perform to its rating no matter what condition it is in, and in a house with any other combustion appliance it is worth taking seriously rather than shrugging at.

The symptom to notice is a door that gets harder to open when the hood is on high, or a hood that works noticeably better with a window cracked. Neither is a hood fault. Both change what the right repair is.

Ductless and recirculating hoods

Not every hood on the beach is ducted. A recirculating hood passes air through a charcoal filter and returns it to the room, and those filters have a service life measured in months rather than years in a kitchen that cooks regularly. A recirculating hood that has stopped clearing the room is usually a filter question before it is a mechanical one.

The visit

The $80 flat diagnostic covers every speed under load, blower wheel and housing condition, the filters, the control and its switching, the damper and termination where it can be reached safely, and the lighting circuit. You get a written estimate before anything is opened up or ordered, and the diagnostic comes off the repair if you go ahead with it.

Parts are genuine OEM, with 90 days on labour and 365 days on parts. On the coast, a blower assembly is a part that will be asked to work in conditions the designer knew about, and the OEM part is the one specified for it.

What it costs

What does a Viking ventilation repair cost at the beach?

Most hood calls end in a clean, a rebalance and new fixings, and those are quoted off the time they take. Where the repair is a part, it is the control that carries a published band, and it is below. The diagnostic comes off whichever it turns out to be.

Diagnostic fee and the researched repair bands for this equipment, parts and labour together.
The work Parts and labour
Diagnostic visit $80 flat, credited to the repair
Control board or touch panel $410–$1,010

That is the one band in the book this page can honestly quote. The rest of the book is on the pricing page. A range is what an appliance this size can honestly be described by before anyone has opened it; the firm figure is written down after the diagnostic and before a part is ordered. Every repair carries 90 days on labour and 365 days on parts.

Asked on the phone

The blower runs but almost no air moves. What is wrong?

The wheel is loaded or out of balance, or the ductwork behind it has lost its path. A coastal hood pulls chloride-laden air through itself every hour it runs, and what settles on the wheel sets hard. The wheel and the housing are cleaned and checked before a motor is discussed.

Only the low speed still works. Is that the motor?

Usually the control rather than the motor. A speed that has dropped out is a switched circuit that no longer closes, and the top speed is almost always the first to go. Where the control itself has failed, that work is $410–$1,010. The motor is tested before anything is ordered.

What customers said

After this job, in their own words

4.9 out of 5, across 76 published customer reviews. Read every one of them.

  • Smoke was rolling back into the room whenever the windows were shut. He explained the make-up air problem clearly, did what could be done at the hood end, and did not pretend he could fix the house.

    Genevieve C.

  • The baffles had corroded at the folds and were shedding into the pan. He fitted a stainless set, cleaned the plenum behind them, and showed me how to get them out for washing without scratching the liner.

    Thaddea V.

  • Rust was weeping out from under the liner and the fan had started to drone badly. He pulled the wheel, cleaned and balanced it, and put in fixings that stand a chance of surviving out here.
