# Viking Maintenance, Month by Month

A care calendar for Viking ranges, hoods, dishwashers and built-ins, and the point where owner upkeep ends and a technician takes over.

Burner head tabs resting on the igniter, or a cap set off level, can keep a range clicking after a cleaning.

Viking maintenance is a short calendar rather than one big yearly job. Brush out the dishwasher filters every week, wash the hood filters every month, wipe and condition the refrigerator door gaskets every three months, and clean the condenser roughly every six months; a straight pin through any blocked burner port looks after the range. Each task takes minutes.

Kitchens a few blocks from the ocean in Jacksonville Beach age faster than inland ones, because salt air and humidity speed up corrosion and help grease and lint cling to everything. That makes the intervals below worth keeping, not just reading.

## Weekly: the dishwasher filters

Viking’s manual for its 3 and 5 Series dishwashers asks owners to clean the filters at least once a week. Twist the micro and coarse filter assembly counterclockwise and lift it out, then slide out the flat filter underneath. Scrub all three pieces with a soft brush under the tap and drop the assembly back in, turning it until you feel it click into place.

A neglected filter shows up as gritty film on glasses, food specks on the top rack and water sitting in the bottom after a cycle. If clean filters do not fix standing water, the problem is likely further down, at the pump or drain path, and the dishwasher repair page covers that.

## Monthly: hood filters, grates and burner ports

Viking suggests washing the baffle and mesh hood filters at least monthly, and they can go in the dishwasher. Frying or wok cooking clogs them sooner, so wash them more often if you cook that way. A recirculating hood also has charcoal filters, which are replaced rather than washed, every 6 to 12 months.

For the burner grates, soak them 15-20 minutes in hot soapy water, adding a cup of sudsy ammonia if the stains are stubborn. Dry them completely, mist the undersides with a little cooking spray and blot off the excess.

On a 5 Series range, a burner with a gap in its flame usually has a blocked port. Clear it with a straight pin only; a toothpick can snap off inside, and anything thicker widens the hole and changes the flame. When the head goes back on, keep its tabs clear of the igniter, seat the cap flat, and point the arrow toward the back of the range.

## Every three months: refrigerator door gaskets

Viking says to clean built-in door gaskets with whatever you use on the interior walls, either a mild detergent or a mix of 4 tablespoons baking soda to each quart of warm water. Dry them, then rub on a thin film of petroleum jelly so the rubber stays soft and keeps sealing. A quick test is to close the door on a strip of paper; if it slides out with no drag, that stretch of gasket is not sealing.

## Twice a year: condenser, filters and ice

Check which reminder your refrigerator gives. On 7 Series integrated models, a blinking CL in the temperature display means the condenser coil is due; Viking asks for that cleaning every 6 months, and holding the up and down arrows for 3 seconds clears it. The FDREIC, FDFZIC and FDBMIC7360 integrated units show CHECK COND. instead: switch the unit off, wait about 30 minutes, take off the grille below the door, vacuum the condenser with a soft brush, then restart and reset the message.

5 Series built-ins use a Super Clog-Resistant pin-and-tube condenser that needs no routine cleaning, though a dusty coil can still be vacuumed with a long, narrow attachment.

The same calendar suits water filters and ice. A 3 Series RVFFR336 French-door model needs a fresh RWFRVFFR cartridge every 6 months, and pressing Alarm Off for 3 seconds afterwards resets its filter reminder. An FGIM5151 clear ice machine wants its ice-making system cleaned at least yearly, ideally twice, and its Time to Clean light comes on at the 6-month mark.

## What a technician adds

Owner upkeep stops at anything behind a panel. A technician checks gas pressure and flame quality, tests igniter spark and the oven’s actual temperature against its setting, listens to the condenser and evaporator fans, inspects the defrost system and looks for early corrosion on terminals and burner bases.

Breakwater Appliance Co. is an independent shop with no Viking affiliation. Visits start with an $80 diagnostic. If a burner still clicks or will not hold a flame after you have cleaned and seated it correctly, igniter or burner assembly work typically falls in the $190–$540 range, with the firm figure given after diagnosis. The professional range repair page lists the symptoms worth booking for.

What the work costs

## What does this repair usually run to?

The diagnostic is $80 flat and comes off the repair. Once the fault is
found, the work below lands between $190 and $1,010 in parts and labour on
this equipment.

Diagnostic fee and the researched repair bands for this equipment, parts and labour together.
The work | Parts and labour |

Diagnostic visit | $80 flat, credited to the repair

Igniter or burner assembly | $190–$540 |

Oven thermostat or heating element | $190–$600 |

Control board or touch panel | $410–$1,010 |

These are the bands that fit this page.
The rest of the book is on the pricing page.

A range is what an appliance this size can honestly be described by before anyone has opened
it; the firm figure is written down after the diagnostic and before a part is ordered. Every
repair carries 90 days on labour and 365 days on parts.
